It isn't that bad. I tend to think people could drive better after smoking a bowlful than if they slammed back three beers.
Marijuana criminalization is an example of 1930's Prohibitionistic law. During that time, alcohol, opium, cocaine, and some other drugs were made illegal.
And the reason why alcohol and ciggies are permitted is because of its wide-spread usage. About 8% of the American population have used pot in the last year. This is compared to about 25% with tobacco and 70% with alcohol.
While I doubt much will change with the laws, I think the American populace is slowly coming towards your ideas. Many places have banned smoking in a lot of places, more states are increasing the tobacco purchase age to 19 or 21 (proposed, but not law, in some states) and more and more places are decriminalizing or legalizing marijuana in small portions (usually less than one oz). I would say in 20 years, smoking age will go to 19 nation-wide, drinking age will be reduced to 19, and marijuana laws will be lessened. I think as kids more and more use dangerous drugs like pills, inhalants or do "the choking game", Americans will realize that a little weed or a coupla beers would be a much better thing for kids to do (if they're going to do something)
Personally, I say sell pot in the liquor stores behind the counter and just make everything 19 to buy. It works in Amsterdam! Just add another year to it so it makes it a little more difficult for 15 yr olds to get beer/weed from high school seniors.

They tried Getting rid of alcohol, but it came back. Alcohol has too many High dollar friends,... Lots of Cathlics.
Pot is being closer to be used legaly for medical uses, some state already allow this, check out:
http://norml.org/
The local LEO's (Law Enforcment Officers) and their courts make too much money off of possession and traffiking, some states pariphanilla also. They would not be able to replace that reveu. This is the same reason cigeretts will not be illegal the taxes are used for a local income.
I beleive that pot should be legal to grow for you own personnal/ medical uses. If you are caught traffiking it,... You should get 20 years in the big house. We should be able to grow it and share it.

None of them should be illegal. It isn't the government's place to tell us what we can or cannot do to our own bodies. The government should only have the right to intervene when you harm another person.
Pot should not be illegal, nor should alcohol or cigarettes. Harming another person should carry heavy penalties, regardless of the reason. Under the influence of any drug is not an excuse.

If you look at the history of criminalizing drugs, mainly Pot, it's because of Tobacco Corporations realizing that it was a strong competitor and they wanted to get rid of it.
After that, it was n the interest of not looking like fools to keep it illegal.

Because judges and politicians smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, but rarely smoke pot (at least they don't inhale ;-). Simple as that.

That's a damn good question. I can't answer it, but I agree, what makes alcohol legal? It too is a drug. You don't hear about pot driving killings, you hear about drunk driver killings.
