If you already have a desktop then buy a laptop that you can take with you on the go but make sure to buy a security cable to lock it down when you leave it behind
If you had not mentioned that you are a student then I would have said a desktop because they are more durable and easier to upgrade.

A laptop will suit you better. I'm a college student also, and it's always better to have a computer that can be with you whenever you need it. A desktop works better for an office or home. Students need freedom, hahaha.

it's more for what you want to do. I will be attending college so my choice is laptop. If you are stationary, want to play hi-def games, or run an illegal dvd title ripping ring, then the desktop is the way to go.
Essentially the desktop is the way to go, you get more bang for your buck w/ better performance, memory, and a bigger monitor. The laptop is the versatile way to go with battery life, and light. It's your choice, but a desktop will better play half life 2

i would buy a laptop, if you plan to bring it with you, desktops..can hold more stuff, like if you want games on it, don't get a laptop. I had a laptop, in fact i have 3, and i played this game sims on one, and after a while it broke, and it won't turn on now.

Being a college student.. Your best bet would probably be a laptop.. this way you can carry it around with you. And type everything in. And for all intense purposes surf the net on the fly.

depends on what you will use it for
College students generally like 2 things
1. Carry their stuff with them wherever they go
2. Play high-end games.
if you go with 1, then buy a laptop
if you go with 2, then buy a desktop
if you want to play mediocre games n still wud luv to have portability, then go with laptop.-

depends on your needs of portability really.
desktop pros at a glance:
less likely to be dropped and broken
easier to upgrade (just buy a card and poof)
normally costs less then comparable laptop
laptop pros at a glance:
portable
takes up less space
looks "cooler"
has out of the box (usually) wireless and "expandable" options (usb, firewire, card readers)
