The Iran-Contra Affair was the largest political scandal in the United States during the 1980s, quite possibly one of the largest political scandals in US history.
Large volumes of documents relating to the scandal were destroyed or withheld from investigators by administration officials. The affair is still shrouded with secrecy and it is very hard to discover the facts. It involved several members of the administration who in 1986 helped sell arms to Iran, an avowed enemy, and used the proceeds to fund the Contras, a fascist anti-communist guerrilla organization in Nicaragua.

After the arms sales were revealed in November 1986, President Ronald Reagan appeared on national television and denied that they had occurred.[4] However, a week later, on November 13, he returned to the airwaves to affirm that weapons were indeed transferred to Iran. The GOP. It's interesting that many of those found guilty of commiting crimes in this scandal were pardoned by Bush Sr. and are now at work with GWB (abrams, Negroponte etc.). God, I wish our country could get rid of these evil criminal murdering people. They are such a national disgrace and embarrassment.

From investigation over the years, it was determined that Reagan (republican) took actions that had pretty much no legal element.

He traveled in secret before the election to secure a deal with Iran to keep the hostages long enough for him to get into office and supply them arms, Then he made good on the promise, setting things up for the Iran contra affair, where he was discovered selling them more weapons and funneling the money to the contra group in South America. Every aspect was illegal, and it was not a one time thing, it began literally day one of his term and lasted until discovered.

That would be the Republicans, specifically the Neo-Conservative Republicans. Oliver North was one of the main characters in that mess. And it was a huge scandal that showed a very ugly side of this country. Also, a lot of the people that were involved in this scandal were pardoned later by George H. W. Bush and then put right back in to office by George W. Bush. Shameful.
