Fortunately, Rap music is not just about the ghetto. If you really researched the term (Rap) and (ghetto) you'd be surprised. The insinuations are cruel and unjust. First of all - Rap music decendants go back as far as Africa - drums, and the 'call and answer' theory of telling stories/slaves in the cotton fields- telling stories that only they knew the meanings in an effort to leave harsh white owned plantations. In the 30's and 40's, other musicians (Cab Calloway) developed and manipulated the style. It has been a progression since time. And today, we have some of the same folks, trying to 'tell their stories' where they live (a ghetto is the neighborhood of any same group of people/culture/often overtime decendants of the same living, producing and growing) In New York and California - you will find many types of ghettos - Italian, Greek, Spanish, Asian , etc. The strange truth about much of this rap music is that the folks singing about it -choose to rap about not only their millions (only a few have reached that category), but what they did prior to this status - selling crack cocaine, and other drugs. Some - not all. Where there is "real" money - I don't mean 'paper', I mean money that can be turned over and over - investments, etc. - you can count on one hand the wise ones who have accomplished the real 'bling' - check it - Diddy, Jay-Z - several others who really have their game in order. Some of these guys - I guarantee - you won't remember their name or song next year......They are called: Fly-By-Night. And I'm not hating, I just know the business of music and have experience in the area of music and finance - lots of them are just show. (How many of them own their own property? Land? Businesses that are helping their community? I don't mean liquor stores either. I mean legitimate businesses that don't depress the people, but elevate? How many have investments and wings that they have donated to hospitals? Youth programs? Let me get off my soap box.....

Rap is DEFINITELY not supposed to be about the ghetto OR how much money they have. This is exactly why Nas entitled his new album "Hip-hop is Dead". Rap is supposed to be about your lyrical content, peace, love, unity, havin' fun, and most importantly KEEPIN' IT REAL which is something that most rappers today don't do. What you hear on the radio is mostly garbage about wealth, violence, and ho's. If you want REAL rap, pick up an A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, KRS-One, Eric B. and Rakim, or Kanye West album! BRING BACK REAAAALLL RAP AND HIP-HOP!

In the begining rap was basically young poor brothers from the hood telling stories, as with ne thing else it evolved to where we r today in the garbage. Its out of control i'm tired of hearing about the women, money n drugs bring back the true mc's of the KRS ONE, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane era. Dont get me wrong there r a few brothers holding it down Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Mos Def, Dead Prez just to name a few but it started in the ghetto n evolved to the present day.

IT ORIGINALLY was supposed to be about life in general and telling stories and being real. Now its about money and material ****. Mainstream hip hop is slowly commiting suicide.
