I recently got a 10 gallon aquarium, and decided i wanted to keep Bettas in it. I already have a male betta in a different tank, but i only bought two female bettas for the new tank. Since they've been home, they keep nipping at each other. I heard that this was normal for them during the first few days of being together, but i also heard that they need to be either single or in groups of three or more. I read a different question, and someone said that you could put a male in with two females. Any advice from anyone else who's kept female Bettas together?

I keep female bettas together all the time and have for years. Got three tanks of them right now as a matter of fact. What you have heard is correct, they will nip at each other during the first few days but rarely do serious damage. It's also very true that they will do much better is kept in a larger group. Adding 3-5 more to the tank would help a lot. In a 10 gallon you could easily keep 10-12 and more if you are extra careful about your water quality.

Do not add any males to the tank though, that's asking for real trouble.

I as quickly as had a 25 gallon tank with 6 Neon Tetras. I added a woman betta and till now each and every thing she chased them around. After setting up that she ws the dominant fish, she paid them no strategies and have been given alongside fantastic with them. some week later, I added 6 Phantom Tetras. The addition of greater "enemies" under pressure her out and he or she went into hiding so I took her out. the different woman betta I put in the tank deliver approximately the comparable effect. the factor i'm attempting to make is that with 3 woman bettas they might have one yet another to rigidity approximately no longer to point the different fish species. It feels like those women folk have never lived at the same time till now so they're going to set up their pecking order righta way. watching the girls pecking order ritual is particularly exciting yet may additionally very demanding. you ought to observe them intently for rigidity and supply distinctive places they might disguise. finding on the female, different fish will merely be an added distraction that could lead on them to get much greater under pressure.

10-12 bettas seems like quite a lot for a 10 gallon tank...I wouldn't keep more than 6, in order to maintain the water quality and avoid stress and disease.

I used to keep my bettas in harems, 1 male to 4-5 females. They nipped a little at first, to establish dominance, but after that they didn't have any problems.
