personal responsibility...you are responsible for your OWN health and if in an accident responsible for the damage you cause...if you cause damage to your own body you are responsible for yourself...it is your freedom to choose not to have health insurance if you don't want to have it...its called FREEDOM from a government nanny and tyranny state...something our founding father fought against...

I would think because auto insurance is primarily to cover the other person in the event they get injured. That way, if you hurt someone else, no money comes out of their pocket. When it comes to your health, the only person you're responsible for is you and you should cover your own bills. I think it's not mandatory because it's so expensive and it would be impossible to enforce. You can't make someone take care of themselves which is why there are so many over crowded ER's. Most non profit hospitals (like the one I work at) are required to care for everyone and if they can't pay the instituion either takes it as a loss (hence it's passed on to people who can pay and why healthcare is sooo expensive) or they use the money from a government fund that pays for the poor and uninsured. Ok, I have to get off my soap box now :)

1. if the car is not paid for, the insurance is used to pay off the loan. Lein holders require you to have insurance so they are sure to get thier money, even if the car is destroyed.
2. All cars, even those that are paid off are required to have liability. That way if you hit someome or something and it is your fault, the insurance takes care of the victim and their property.
3. Life insurance is not required because it covers only you. If you don't want to take care of yourself, why should the government care?

Health insurance is much more expensive and only benefits yourself.

Auto insuance is for the benefit of others around you. Can you imagine being hit by a person who has no insurance and can't pay for your damages?

I think I know. Everyone cares if their damn car gets wrecked but no one cares if our body don't function.
