Not sure what year but it was formed after the Civil War when Confederate vets were bitter about the South's loss to the North. It was started by Nathaniel Forest Bedford, a Confederate veteran.

in 1866...it was originally created to simply scare people (scalawags and carpetbaggers back then)...but in about 1915 it started to become a violent hate cult
