A reflex is an involuntary response to a specific stimulus (a stimulus is any act or agent which causes a reaction in a particular tissue). A reflex is considered a "stereotypical" response, in that it is a mechanical response brought about by the stimulation of a particular neuron, resulting in a particular action which is not varied through the voluntary control of the individual.Although one normally considers such movement to be completely at the will of the individual to initiate or prevent, this reflex occurs without the involvement of the individual's brain. It is always surprising to see one's body perform such a seemingly voluntary act, with no actual effort or desire on the part of the individual.

When you provokea reflex response your body wants to remove that stimulus ASAP so FIRST you have a spinal reflex arc. The stimulus goes to the spinal cord and immediately to the motor nerve connect to the part of the body, causing to to involutarily pull away from the needle. The response is also transmitted up the spinal cord to the pain sensation area of the brain. The mood, and memory areas also receive signals. Finally the language area of the rain is accessed

Sensory neurons send the data of your finger being pricked to interneurons, which send in impulse back to motor neurons in your finger which causes you to pull your finger back by reflex, and also sends an impulse to the spinal cord and then up to the brain which processes the fact that you've been hurt and in pain, and then sends impulses to your mouth, toungue, and lung muscles to say "ouch".
