New World Champion?

That's a fairly tall order for a newcomer to Formula 1, but after seeing how he handled the pressure and remained so utterly cool and controlled throughout, anything is possible.

Only once in a generation does a talent like this creep from under the tarmac, and the last time I recall being so impressed was when the late Ayrton Senna burst on the scene.

Lewis Hamilton, in spite of his youth, has enormous race experience, but then, so do many other drivers. What impresses me is not so much his ability to go very fast, (which goes without saying), but his ability to think. The way he just drove around the World Champion, Alonso, at the first corner, was just magnificent, and from there on, Alonso could do nothing but watch and follow.

3rd may be impressive, but had it not been for team strategy, he would have been 2nd, and that makes the achievement all the more remarkable.

The big question mark is the one hanging over the Maclaren car itself, which at this moment in time, is running at a lesser pace than the perfectly balanced and very powerful Ferrari: but then, it's a team-sport, and Lewis Hamilton is only a part of the whole package.

Seeing how fast and beautifully poised the Ferrari was, even for the first race of the season, Maclaren have some catching-up to do.

Personally, I think Lewis Hamilton has the brains and the speed to do it, and more importantly, he seems capable of staying out of trouble and getting to the finish.

World Champion?

Possibly so if they get the car on a par with the Ferrari, but maybe another year if he has to wait for the best machinery.

I hope that Maclaren can deliver, because Hamilton WILL do it sometime in the near future, because he is a World Champion in the making; of that I have no doubt.

If there is one thing which might hold him back, it will be his sense of loyalty to Maclern, and to Uncle Ron especially, but maybe that's a good thing after all.

I think it's great when a chap like Ron Dennis says, "They're such nice guys (Alonso & Hamilton) which makes the job so much more enjoyable."

How can anyone answer this without guessing? We have over 6 months of racing to go. We don't know how any of the teams will fare two weeks from now, much less 6 months from now.

Hold on. Let me flip a coin. Heads, and Lewis will win the WDC, tails and he won't. Here we go. . . . . .

HEADS!

Well, there you have it. Lewis Hamilton will be the 2007 Formula One World Driver's Champion. Now you don't have to watch any of the races because you already know the outcome.

Congratulations, Lewis. You did a good job! Er, . . . you're GOING to do a good job. Yeah. That's it.

yes it was impressive. a podium on his first F1 in the the first race of the season.
world champion? May be within five seasons if the team can keep up and improve the cars performance.

I hope the team improve the cars performance and lewis learns to relax more and may be push the car more to get and keep up the podium finishes and improve on 3rd.
wouldnt it be great to see alonso and hamilton first and second. in either order. will we see that this season?
and what of the night race that bernie talked about when intervied pre race? that will be fun as the designers will have to either fit lights to the cars or the course will have to be flood lit. somehow i think bernie was joking about a night race but who knows.

He sure impressed a lot of people with his first F1 start. There is no doubt that he is a gifted driver, but there is a learning curve in F1 that he will have to go through. He made a couple of mistakes in his first race, which is to be expected. As he gains experience, and if McLaren-Mercedes continues to provide the right equipment, he may indeed win a race this year.

I think it is way too early to talk about him winning an F1 driving championship. I have no doubt that it will be exciting to watch him in the coming years.

Good luck to all the teams.

He really impressed me in this race. Still, I think is too early to judge him. Last year everyone thought that Nico was better than God after the first race. However, the rest of the season was just average.

World champion possible, but certainly not this year. He drove well yesterday, but it was more or less expected that he would get on the podium considering Massa was at the back of the grid and the Macca is the second quickest car.

Wow! I've been an F-1 fan for close to 20 years and in that time I've scene a lot of rookies that come in with the hype of sliced bread and end up being a dried up turd. He looked great this weekend. I doubt this year, but he will be the champ someday.

A rookie is still a rookie...we shouldn't put too much hype on him yet, he has got a good package in his car yesterday. I think he still have lot to learn. Look at Raikonnen, he's a fantastic driver but sometimes still struggling for McLaren.
Promising no doubt, we'll know how he can cope up with the rest of the circuits for the next 7 months.

Nope.
I think the title is gonna go to one of the Ferrari drivers most possibly, Kimi. They look pretty dominant and Ferrari seems to favour Kimi over Felipe. Anyways, McLaren is gonna have a lotta problems mid-season as last year and the year before that.
So, I would bet my money on Kimi and Ferrari
