The qwerty keyboard layout is a hold over from the days of manual typewriters. Most people learn that system so the keyboard stays the same. There is an alternative called the Devorak system which is supposed to be faster and easier to learn. There are Devorak keyboards you can buy if you can find a class that teaches the system.

Because qwerty was made when the typewriters were still around. Basically, alphabetical order made the keys get stuck, but qwerty didn't, so it stayed this way so that ex-typewriters could use the keyboard.

Why not change now? Silly Question... you're crazy.

:P

And because people would be dumb and say "how does this work?"

I have a Devorak keyboard and it rocks. It took sometime to learn the layout of the keyboard lettering. But once you learn it you can 1.5-3.0 time your typing speed with less mistakes. I when from 60-75WPM to almost 135WPM avg to max of 180+for 3-5min burst with 1-5 mistakes. It will be a long time before Devorak keyboards are the norm if they are at all...thanks
