Love is a multi-faceted thing. I suspect you mean romantic love, so I'll start with that. To me, romantic love is the stage after infatuation. It's when you know the worst about your partner, and you can accept it and live with it. You trust and respect your partner, and you genuinely care about his/her welfare and do what you can to make him/her happy.
Friendship is it's own kind of love, whereby you know you don't have to be intimately involved with your friend, but you are close, and there is trust and respect. You should at least be tollerant of your friends' foibles, if you love them.
Family you have a biological connection to and a feeling of obligation to love them. Sometimes you don't, but generally speaking, the family bond keeps you together long enough to find good in each other and develop genuine love. I don't have kids, but I suspect from the parent's point of view, the love there is instant, because a child pops out with a clean slate and is yours to teach.
Then there's the general love for mankind. It doesn't mean you have to run around hugging people, but just that you might have a general respect and goodwill toward others.
