I bought a book called the "All Music Guide To Rock" - the best CDs, albums & tapes Rock, Pop, Soul, R&B and Rap Edited by Michael Erlewine, Vladimir Bogdanov & Chris Woodstra from the AMG all music guide series that has been an ENDLESS source of valuable info! It's totally worth the price (around 25 bucks when I bought it).

If you're looking for less mainstream rock from the 70s and 80s, listen to Kate Bush. It's a little far out and avant-garde, but I personally LOVE it.

less mainstream would be to try..
Wishbone Ash
Montrose
Richie Blackmore's Rainbow
Puzzle
It's A Beautiful Day, somewhat mainstream
Pacific Gas & Electric
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Quicksilver and Its A Beautiful day really only had a few good songs on the charts, but they were really great ones.
Enjoy.
