we all know the famous song by paper lace, the night chicago died. what actually happened the night "chicago died"?

The song is fiction; they were probably talking about one of the gangster shoot-outs in the 20s & 30s. The group was from England and had never been to Chicago, but liked the old gangster movies. In the song, the cops and the gangsters are having a shootout and the family's waiting to hear if the father survived.

I liked the song myself, but I know a lot of people hated it. One thing they hated is that there's not really an "East Side" Chicago which told people who lived there that the writer wasn't from Chicago.
