A checking account lets you trace your payments. If you paid your electricity bill with a check (real or electronic) there is a trail of evidence. So even if the electricity company says they have not received payment, you will have a way to track down the payment and find out what happened.

One time I mailed my rent check to my property management company. They said I didn't pay my rent, but I was able to go online through my bank and find the cancelled check. The property management had applied my rent to a neighbor's apartment. If I had paid with cash, I wouldn't have had that evidence.

If you are a student, most banks and credit unions have a free checking account. The credit union that I work for requires only $25 to open a checking account. It is a good thing to have in today's world.
