Your iPod is not dead. It is not broken. You don't have to return it to the store or anything.

You have entered what is called "Diagnostic Mode"; this is a special area of the iPod for testing. The "HPDETECT" that you see in your screen means Headphone Detect --- somehow, your iPod entered diagnostic mode and started doing a test to see if any headphones were plugged in. The "HP FAIL" means that no headphones were plugged in.

To get your iPod working normally, simply leave it alone and let all of its battery run out. There is no way to leave this screen until the battery is empty. Once the battery is empty there won't be anything on the screen anymore. When this is the case, plug the iPod back into your computer and let it finish charging completely. It will then be working properly again.

Hope this helps!

Press the menu button and the select button at the same time make sure the hold button is off. This will reset everything but you will also lose any music or video in memory but you can always re-download it in your itunes.

If you have the one year warranty and it hasn't been one year yet. You can use it and it would be cover under the warranty. If that don't work you have to buy a new one.
