Wouldn't it be nice to have everyone who publically make Racial Statements to be held accountable, possibly face a jail term or do community service for making a Racial Slur or Statement?? Recently I've seen so many down right nasty statements made on even yahoo answers that are almost criminal.. I know this would be close to impossible to enforce due to freedom of speech, but what do you suggest to be a good solution?

I know by posting this there will be many people who just come and post something ignorant and make a racial statement, but for once be mature and come up with a solution..

yes I agree it's against the 1st ammendment.. but I feel this is something that should be looked into.

Citations?? Tickets? and yes we would have many people locked up (98%) but one night in jail sure would make ya think about saying it again.. Again I do know of freedom of speech so to say it's illegal to do so is correct, but maybe it's time to put guidelines on what freedom of speech is.. I don't believe that includes deformation of character, and simply thats what this is...

Zether... Although I do agree Freedom of "Speech" is necessary, I believe you have interpreted "freedom of speech" to be "freedom of deformation of character". The 1st Ammendment is not a blanket coverage for people to openly deface another human being. And to place this into the families hands to correct is rediculas and has proven to only increase the hate as this is where it begins in the first place. Deformation of Character in no ways can be stretched to be covered under the 1st Ammendment. Remember "Deformation of Character" is illlegal and thats what this is all about.

I'm guessing you would have 98% of the population in jails or doing community service......most of the races make or have made racist comments in their life at one time or another....it's the world we live in.....I wish it were not like that but it is.......I can't think of a solution but would certainly agree we need one.

As long as there are different races there will always be racism, sorry but that's the way it is. When people are in a mix race group, everyone is cool, but if you are with just one race the conversation can turn south, you have noticed this or else you wouldn't feel you had to ask the question. There is no short term solution, ignorance and prejudice are part of the human nature.

and so the nazi wanabes start showing themselves

yea, its a nice plan to start policing people and watching what they say, racial slurs and what not
hell, why stop there, maybe you should also outlaw any gender slurs
hell, how bout we go even further and start wiping out al the racial and gender jokes too because those can be taken as slurs too
and why stop there slurs are nothing but negative speech, perhaps we should criminalize any type of hatefull or negative speech, why stop there even, maybe we should start criminalizing any speech or idea that does not agree with our ideas or speech because it is not like ours so therefore it must be wrong and evil

i love when some bonehead comes on here and starts putting together some dumb idea that is useless as **** on a bull

the first amendment is there to protect free speach and thought, wether it is good or bad, because no one institution should be made to monitor ideas and base those ideas as good or bad under its own beliefs

i am polish, and most people out there will say that polaks are dumb, should i be alowed to throw them in jail or fine them, i don't think so, what for, they have their opinion and i don't feel thretened by it, i know my own capabilities and so i look at the person and i know that the coment came from an ignoramus

but to sit there and make thoughts and ideas and opinions illegal is the simple way out, it simply gives merit to the statements because the person that the statement is made by all of a sudden feels threatened by it, it is only words, and yet you feel so thretened by it that you would resort to government action against the users of such words, most people feel threatened by the truth, so they try to discourage it, distort it, destroy it, so now, if you are so thretened by such insignificant words, does that mean they are true, do you wish to ban truth?

it is simple to outlaw something that is bad for society or creates victims, but thoughts and opinions and speech is a whole different story onto itself, there should never be a regulation of speech, people should be allowed to think as they feel and speak as they want without the threat of the government coming down to catch them

i've read some classics, and i've been through history, and what you are proposing is a utopia based on big brother and 1984, although i don't remember it being a utopia in the strictest sense of the word, and in history, plenty of times there have been governments that tried to subdue the population into thinking and talking the way they wanted them to, comunist china, comunist russia, nazi germany, comunist north vietnam, and a few others that i don't need to mention since i think you already get the idea, would you really like to take us down that road, i've seen that road, the road is blocked with millions of victims and the gutters are overflowing with their blood

racial slurs should be banned by parents raising their children based on morality, not by the government based on legality

Freedom of Speech skill which you have the main superb to declare issues people do in comparison to. Racists get to present their ideals merely as people who are not. There are people who have faith that categorical races are greater advantageous to others. because of the fact they have the liberty to speak, their perspectives are public. and that i might truthfully desire to be attentive to who the racists are. between the aggravating circumstances of loose speech is tolerating the speech of people who you will possibly spend a lifetime opposing. And for the checklist, Don Imus replace into punished with the help of a private entity, no longer a state actor. the government did no longer punish Imus.

Well in NY, you cannot use the "n" word.....but what is funny is that the only ones who use it now days, are black ppl.....white ppl have been forbidden for many years to use this word.....but however black ppl have been allowed to use racial slures against white ppl. either way it is racist.....so are we talking about all people being put in jail and held accountable, or just one particular color?
