is it against copyright laws if I take a black circle and put "abc" in it as a different font? or can ABC Television sue me? If so, what can I do to get the point across that this logo was meant for abc television?

abc affiliate stations have marketing agreements with the network. they can use the logo, but it has to be correctly displayed. anything other that the official mark will get them in trouble.

if your mark is not abc affiliated, then it must be done in such a way as to very clearly NOT mean abc network. If there is any chance of confusion, there will be an infringement action.

nbc changed its logo a number of times, and one version was nearly identical with nebraska educational television. they had to make a very generous settlement in order to continue using the mark.

i think you could get away with it, but Paul Rand may roll over in his grave when you do.

Is this for profit? if so, are you specifically trying to make it look the same, or are you trying to redesign it?

If you're trying to redesign it, try using a typeface with a two-storey lowercase a (the a with the dangly-thing on the top), or something else to make it look different.

ABC is a brand name, so I would avoid publishing it without their concent, but if its for a student project, you shold be able to get away with anything.

You should speak with someone in the Legal Department where you work.

I don't believe logos can be copyrighted. Only trademarked.
