Galveston would be your best bet. Pretty inexpensive this time of year and only about 45 minutes south of Houston. The beach will probably be warm enough to walk on, and you can stop at Kemah on the way back and enjoy that as well. Lots of fun.
The strand has older shops and is connected to a trolley system that will take you around on a tour of the island...all the way from downtown to the beach/seawall! Mmody Gardens is great, and then there's the Schlitterbahn water park for the kids (or the fun adults). Here's a link to all galvenston has to offer:

Kemah has restaurants and rides galore and has a carnival-type atmosphere. A must see for tourists. Link:

Hope this helps!!!

For water, Lake Conroe is great north of the city, for beach, Galveston, but it gets old fast, but not within 2 days, try the Tremont Hotel or Hotel Galvez. Most of the museums, etc are in the city in the museum district, but Google the handbook of Texas online to see probably every historical museum in the area.
For a great time out in a small town with lots of history, in the piney wood is a little town called Woodville, TX. They have all you were asking about.

I'd be headed north to Lake Conroe. Lots of water activities and heavily wooded. I really like the area.
The problem with Galveston at this time is spring breakers. They'll be there until the first of April. No fun being around a bunch of drunken teenagers.

Spring is carefully distinctive from Spring branch. they're 30 miles aside. Spring branch is barely secure SOUTH of the Katy constrained-get right of entry to highway. this is incredibly Memorial. Spring branch north of the constrained-get right of entry to highway is especially crime-ridden. whilst the apartment growth went bust interior the late 80s, HUD got here in and ran each and every of the residences alongside Hammerly and long element (and owned quite some homes off Clay and Gessner). They slashed rents and the section's demographic shifted extensively. the section is now predominantly hispanic, with quite some former inner city human beings moving out of the close to south factor and close to north. in greater moderen years has been the inflow of unlawful extraterrestrial beings. quite some the crime is regarding drugs, run by making use of gangs of illegals. They blended in with the criminal inhabitants. Spring branch west of Beltway 8 remains a first rate sufficient section, quite the some distance west section close to the ability hall. So, you're greater effective off in Spring.
