It was banned because NBA believed that man-to-man defense will allow great althletic players, like Jordan, Dr J, Dominic Wilkens, etc to create more actions and hence attract more fans. It was introduced almost when the NBA was began ... like 50+ years ago. It was changed during the 2001-2002 season which eliminated the illegal defense violation in favor of a defensive 3 second violation. Stu Jackson, Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations, claims that with zone defense, more players will get involved. In five-man offensive schemes there will be more movement, more players taking shots, a different requirement to have better shooters and will be good for the game. Moreover he said that it will not stop a great player from being great, no matter what defense you have.

I believe the zone defense was banned within one or two years after, Bill Russell (the greatest NBA player of all time) entered the league. The Celtics would put Mr. Russell in the center of the defensive basket, and he would block shots. Not only did he block them, but he would direct his blocks to his breaking teammates and start the fast break. I might add, how was he rated 7h all time best playes behind people that do not have as many rings, and who never had a rule changed because of their talents?

Because it slows down games and clogs the lane. The NBA, as well as being a basketball league, is an entertainment league. Drives to the basket followed by dunks are more exciting to watch than a bunch of outside shots.
