Sometimes, when I'm having a dream, I'll realize I'm asleep and in a dream. When I do, I am able to fly and do all kinds of stuff that's a total blast. Usually I fly around which is so fun but I almost always wake up shortly after that. Is that weird though - to be asleep and know it? Has that happened to anyone else?

Yes. What you are describing is called a lucid dream. When I was in graduate school one of my professors, Scott Sparrow, wrote a book on the subject entitled, Lucid Dreaming; Dawning of the Clear Light. As you have discovered you have control and can do wonderful things within the dream. For scary dreams you can actually confront the monster and vaporize it with a pouf--or transform it into a dandy lion if you wish. The point is once you realize you are dreaming, you are in control. You can even train yourself to "wake-up " within your dreams so you are consciously aware that you are dreaming, while being physically asleep.
It is really a fascinating field. Sweet dreams all.

yup I used to dream like that notably frequently before. they say having a dream interior a dream skill you're having a great problem.. yet i'm undecided if it quite is actual. I used to dream one dream and then i will dream that I awoke from my mattress.. each and every so often I even advised my mom approximately what I dreamed.. and then i will awoke understanding it is in basic terms a dream. i will shake my head and ask Am I having yet another dream?

A couple of times I remember thinking that I was asleep, and that all this stuff wasn't really happening. Particularly when I have dreams about relatives who have died--somehow I seem to know that they aren't real, but just dreams.

Yes. It's a relief when the dream is bad and I cannot escape, and realize "wait, it's only a dream." However, when I'm having a great time and have to give it up because I realize I am dreaming, that's frustrating.
