I have a friend going to one and she was all excited and it sounded like a fun thing for the outdoors-y fun person she is... but the more I read about them the more I'm wondering what she didn't tell me. Are they for kids with problems? Did she say she's going to a "wilderness camp" for three months when really it's a bott camp for kids with problems?

people die...not trying to scare you, but there seems to be one death every other year or more. It's nothing to be excited about. It is hard work.

There are all kinds of wilderness camps. Some are for recreation. Some are for building life skills and character in kids who are at risk but haven't gotten into serious trouble. Some are therapeutic camps which can be hard work, for kids that do have fairly serious problems. Some are "boot camps." There are probably more kinds that I don't know about. And the categories can overlap; some of the therapeutic camps also take kids who just want the wilderness experience.
I know 2 boys who went to therapeutic wilderness camps; one got much better, the other reverted to his old ways, but he probably learned something.
And I own a dog that used to be a therapy dog in a wilderness therapy camp.
