Sounds like it has been 'Got At' by something or another.
I would suggest that you uninstall it completely, then download new software and install that, then update it straight away - before you run a scan(in Safe Mode preferably).
Updates should be very quick - on a dial up 15mins at most. good luck

4 or 5 hours? Takes me 4 or 5 seconds to update, unless you are on a terribly slow connection, it shouldn't take that long at all.
If this is an older version of SpyBot, you might try downloading a newer version and see if it takes as long.

while updating your Spybot-S & D desable the other spyware/ adaware/ antivirus untill the update finished..because
when all this sofwares are working toghether..they use a lot of u'r pc ressources, and the new coming files must be scaned by the other on a hidden mode...and create a conflict..

If sypbot is taking so much time on your computer to update. You need to download the update file seperately

unless you have a bug that is targeting spybot, just cancel if it doesn't download within three min, close it down try again, if the sever is busy this will happen.

Up the top, there is a button (2nd from left), you need to click it and choose another update server. The one your using is just slow.

No that's not normal i would remove that version and try to reinstall it.
