I graduated with a BA English last year, but in the past year, I've began creative writing. Although I majored in English I didn't take any creative writing courses. I now want to apply to several MFA in Creative Writing programs, but none of my former professors are familiar with my work. Do I have any chance of getting accepted, especially since I haven't published anything and none of my recommendation letters will be from professors who can comment on my creative writing? What do you think?

You'd have a much better chance if you had taken some coursework in creative writing, and if your professors had seen some of your creative work.

At this point, your application will focus heavily on whatever writing samples you submit, as well as any other evidence of your potential as a writer.

I strongly suggest that you contact former professors immediately, and ask them if they will take a look at your current work, and if they would then feel able to recommend you to an MFA program. That way, if they agree, their appraisals of your work can be worked into their letters of recommendation.

In the meantime, you should also try to publish some of your work somewhere. Get the current Writer's Market guide, and scour it for appropriate venues for your work.

Oh, and join an active, tough, writing group.

Best wishes to you!

Why don't you get published.

Write a short story for a small publication and get the typical entry level fee of $35

When you get published as part of your Masters program the fee won't be much higher than that!

You could apply your bachelor's to writing professionally and I could recommend some sites you could consider to build your portfolio so you can consider getting into grad school.
