This saying (like many others) comes from the Bible. This one is from Daniel, 5:24-30.

A disembodied hand appeared and wrote on the wall where Belshazzar (Nebuchadnezzar's grandson) was using the holy vessels from the Temple to party with. The hand wrote "mene, mene, tekel, upharsin" which means "your kingdom is numbered and finished, you've been weighed in the balances and are found wanting, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians." Basically, 'your number is up' (another fine saying attributed to the Bible!).

So, saying "I can see the writing on the wall" refers to knowing the end is near, a foreshadowing of negative events.

It can mean a lot of things so you have to read the guarantee carefully. Ideally, the breeder should guarantee the puppy against genetic defects for the lifetime of the dog or for at least several years (one year is not enough - many genetic defects like hip dysplasia don't show up until age 2 or later), especially if the dog is for breeding and showing. This guarantee is generally only given if the parents have had proper genetic health clearances appropriate to the breed. The breeder should also guarantee against infectious diseases for several weeks and other health conditions that are congential. For example, my sister had a puppy with a congenital hernia - a common, easy repair at neutering - but the breeder paid for that repair. That's the sign of a good guarantee and a good breeder. Bad breeders have very limited health guarantees and often don't back them up.

Handwriting on the wall -- Meaning a threat of impending doom. "I see the handwriting on the wall."

: : In the Old Testament, Daniel, Chapter 5, (paraphrasing greatly here) Belshazzar and his buddies were on a drunken toot and used golden vessels from the temple of God to drink wine. The disembodied hand writing on the wall meant bad news for Belshazzar.

And it means that looking at a given situation it will be easy to predict its outcome, and that when using this expression the outcome will usually not be good.

It means: I know what's going on you don't have to write it on the wall. Now, in the case of my kids it would be written on the wall in crayons and chalk
