The egg.

An Egg is a potential chicken

A chicken is an actual chicken

Since potentiality precedes actuality, the egg came first. You can't become a chicken without first being a potential chicken.

The next step is "where did the egg come from"? The answer to this is that two animals (who were not chickens, and were not potential chickens), got together and formed a potential chicken (chicken egg). While neither one alone could become a chicken, together, they created a potential chicken (egg), which then became a chicken.

The Egg.

Here's why.

The first "chicken", like all species, came as a result of a mutation of an earlier species.

So, when the chicken's "mother" laid the egg that contained it, it was, in essence, in that egg, and yet genetically different from its "mother", who was therefore not a chicken.

for many years i pondered this question and many like it, than i read Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. then i realized that the chicken and the egg did not matter at all.philosophy should be more about how one should live and not abstract far reaching notions that will never make a difference in ones life.
