After 2 and a half years, it came to a sudden halt.. All of the dreams and promises we made together, came to nothing.. Are there good ways to recover from this sadness... How long would it take? Thanks for your answers :)

Been there, too....
It hurts like hell!

The Chinese have a saying..."Time can be your best friend...OR your worst enemy!"
There is no time limit...People are different and some take longer than others to overcome the end of a love relationship.

Give yourself time.....to heal and to stop hurting. Try to take care of yourself and try to think about other things other than her. Only you have the power to help yourself get over this.

We can try to help you out by telling you it's OK to feel so sad, but ultimately only you will decide when it's time to stop grieving and move on.
Good luck.

I feel for you. I'm on the same end. My now ex-bf broke up with me four weeks ago yesterday and by the following weekend was on a date with a girl who is not attractive and big, the are now dating. How could he? It floored and devastated me in one shot. All that talk of our house, our wedding, our kids is gone and I'm beyond devastated. I've been talking and leaning on my friends so much. Without them I really think I would've jumped off a bridge b/c the pain has been so great. It kills me that the promises and dreams came to nothing. All that talk meant nothing? I guess I wasn't the love of his life he once told me I was. I don't know how it came to this and without a fight. My friends have been my rock, but I'm actually going to see a counselor b/c I need someone to be objective with me and help me. I can't even fathom dating anyone else at this point. I dread my lonely weekends, best thing I've researched so far is to make new friends, hang with old ones and keep busy. Best of luck b/c I know how you're feeling right now.

Time will always soften the sadness of a break up. The best way to recover is to stay busy initially and definitely keep up with friends who will understand your sadness. Hopefully they will help distract till you are feeling better. A new romantic interest would definitely do it too! ;) I'm sorry you feel so cheated after sharing so much with another person who didn't appreciate you.

It is difficult but you should see that most of us go through same or similar kind of trails at personal level. Every one of us has freedom and we exercise our freedom. Sometimes, when others execute their free will, we feel hurt and sad but we also so tat same for other in some areas. We should accept the decisions of other even if they hurt us because they have freedom to do so. When you want to come out of such hurt and sad feelings, you must also take a decision to come out. Once you decide to come out, you must stand for it and do not think about it at all. You can even come out of a hell like situation if you decide to do so. God has given freedom and will power to take a decision and stand for it. So, trust that future is good and all things are going to work out for you better life. Press on with hope and much love. Come out of pain and hope for pleasure and peace of life.

At best, you will be too busy to be sad.

At worst, you will have completely forgotten about her by this time next year.
