Do you believe that the 'gay community' exists or is the 'gay community' a marketing tool to attract tourists?

Amongst gays, there is a sense of community/family. My lesbian friend often reassure her other lesbian friends when I'm around by saying, "It's OK. She's family." I may be straight, but I've adopted the gay community as much a part of my life as everyone else I love.

Then there are actual communities with gay-owned businesses. We have at least one area in my home town.

So, I don't think it's a marketing tool at all. And I don't see how tourists would be attracted to it. "Oh, look, honey! It's The Gays! Let's go see them!" Sounds kind of silly to me.

The gay community is usually a local area that is open and helpful to its gay citizens. In Columbus, Ohio I know that it has a strong gay community, especially in the Short North area. Areas that are open to it will have a stronger gay community, and areas that don't will not. I think that the saying 'gay community' is used to be specific and point out that there is a strong gay presence in a region. Many organizations exist to reach out and unite gay people who live in an area.
