Hello.. I'm just wondering about protocol or whatever at work. I"m looking for a new job and I saw that there was an opening job at my company's client's company and I would like to apply. Would it be such bad ethics to contact someone there, who I know the company deals with and send my resume directly to that person? Or it's better to send the resume to the company's HR? Thanks!

Better to go through the companies HR. You wouldn't want the wrong info to get to the wrong person before you actually get the job. The companies HR department may look you name over all together and will more that likely not even realize that you are in direct contact with their company on a daily basis. Let it be know when you get to the interview. It may even be a plus that you already have a heads up about their business, company, and employees.

This is tricky, because you don't want it getting back to your boss that you submitted a resume to this company. How well do you know the person you know there? Do you think he/she would keep your confidence? If so, you can mention that you know they are hiring and see what he/she says. I'm inclined to say go through the Human Resources Department, but also mention it to the person you know there. Tread carefully though, because this kind of thing can easily blow up in your face.

It might burn some bridges, but if you didn't sign a non-compete agreement when you took your current job, you can go anywhere.
