Figure 8's will change color when they mature. Puffers are funny fish and are known for their antics. Swimming with curved tail, in a Figure 8 which is where their name comes from. Unless he isn't eating or has the visual signs of ich, chances are he is just being a puffer.

How large is his tank? Are you running him in Brackish water or fresh?

What are your water parms? need more info. Sounds like he is just being a puffer, however if no others are acting WEIRD, there could be a problem. What color is he changing to?

Feel free to email me and I'll try to help.

i doesn't shop any type of puffer with a violet goby, they are very sluggish transferring and they puffer will nip its fins, similar will flow with the guppies and mollies, it should be my wager that the puffers will attempt to devour them. Nix the puffers except you want to verify a species in person-friendly words tank, it extremely is what's recommended for puffers of any species.

I haven't kept them personally, but I'll offer some possibilities.

Do you have salt in their water? These fish need brackish water (meaning there has to be salt in it).

What sized tank are they in? These are fairly territorial and may not have enough space. One might be picking on the other. How well do yours get along? Is the water changed regularly?

Is the one that is doing the behavior you describe doing it in front of the other one? This could be a courtship display, if done near the bottom of your tank. The sexes are alike, so you may have a male and female. They have been reported, (but never documented) to spawn in aquaria before, however.

I'm great with fish, and had never lost one, until I got a figure 8 puffer. They're difficult fish to keep, imo. They need brackish water, hard foods to wear down their teeth, and they can be very grumpy little fish. They're cool, but I can't seem to keep them alive.

Is it doing it for just short periods of time?

Mine does that when it's hunting... I couldn't tell you about what it does if it's courtship or aggression, since mine only has flounders and bumblebee gobies as mates.

That's just from my observations...

Keep in mind, it is brackish too.
