Well, usually best selling-novels become movies, to milk as much money from the story as possible, but also highly visual novels (ones that you can see being made into a movie). IRobot is a good example, as well as The Bourne Identity. Characters are important, but story is the king.

Description and dialog. Actors want roles that they can see themselves in and directors want scenes that they can make come to life on film.
