A blue screen of death is never an indication of what's wrong unless it contains information about the failure. If the screen is blue and blank, it's just about impossible to tell what's wrong with it. I would try to boot into safe mode. To access safe mode, press the F8 key after your bios screen but before you see the windows xp logo with the loading bars on a black screen. This will take you to a menu where you can select safe mode. If the computer will run in safe mode, try running a virus scan. Also, click Start => all programs => accessories => system tools => system information. Then on the menu bar for "system information" click tools => file signature verification utility. This utility will check your critical files for changes and attempt to fix if possible. If you cannot boot into safe mode, there's a chance that your operating system could be corrupted or that you have a serious hardware problem. There really isn't any indication whether the problem is hardware or software related. I would try using your compaq system restore discs if you can't access windows with safe mode. If that still doesn't work, then you most likely have a hardware problem. That's when you buy a new laptop.
