If the drive itself is bad, then it's easy to replace; you just shut off the power, open the case, pull out the old one (it has a data plug and a power plug), and plug in the new one. You can usually get a new drive for $25 or less.

If the drive was working before, then there's a good chance that ME's drivers have created a problem with the drive; you'll be much better off re-installing Win 98 and upgrading to Win 98se, or Win XP.

Using a computer with a good 'A Drive' ,go to this site and download a WIN 98 Boot Disk.
Run the Win 98 Boot Disk. Do every thing but Do Not complete thru Set-up.Exe. INSTEAD, Change to your WIN ME and Run It ALL the way. ( IE Fdisk, Format, Scandisk Etc. )
Them try to run SETUP.EXE
It may now Recognize the CD drive.
If not, Replace the CD drive and try again.

Good Luck.

Hi. A new CD-ROM is cheap. But an upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows ME (Millennium Edition) only improves connectivity and is not worth the effort, in my opinion. There is no system restore in either OS.
