Foundation questions are used to set the stage to allow a particular witness to testify. for example, let's say you want someone to testify about making a PB&J. Maybe anyone could do this, but the court wants to know that the person you have selected knows something special or unique...maybe the person holds the world record for number of PB&J made in a single minute, or maybe the person is testifying about the ability to hide poison in the PB and they are a chemist specializing in toxins. You ahve to ask things of the person on the stand to ellicit that information...like this...

Q: Mr. Jif, what is your background in the PB industry

A: I am the namesake for JIF PB, my family inovated a method the mix it so that the oil doesn't settle at the top.
I also have a PhD in penut chemistry and allergic factors leading to untimely death. I have worked on 1284 cases alledging peanut allergy contribution to death

Q. So you are knowledgable about how one with peanut allergies may be adversly effected?

A: indeed...

That is the foundation. then the questioner can get to the heart of what they have to ask...

Q: Does the body look like it went into allergic shock as a result of a peanut allergy?
