Im planning to go to medical school next fall, but I couldnt help thinking, is college worth it for the average person from a financial perspective. Yes it is necessary for certain jobs, doctor, lawyer, etc. College can easily cost about $125,000 for four years plus room and board. Most people have to take out loans for this which means they actually pay more than this. If they had just gotten a government job say w/ the post office, they would have saved this $125,000, or more. Been able to make close to $100,000 working for the four years rather than in school. So it looks like college can actually cost you around 225,000 in theory. Especially for the parents who have the money to pay for their kids college. Wouldnt they be better off investing that 100,000-150,000 for their kids and letting their kids get a job w/o a degree. That money will probably be close to 1 million dollars within 20-25 years, right?

I know a lot of dumb people that need education.

If you're the type of guy that wants diplomas around your room and feel like a well educated individual then why not?

At least you'll have something to show for it while you're still alive.

Depends on what you want to do with your life.

Being educated is important, but so it picking up the trash in the neighborhood.

There are a lot of places that you can get an education like your local library.

You are right about the money, but money isn't everything and many people need college as a foundation for lifelong learning. Or at least that's the theory.

Your starting salary out of college will be significantly higher than the starting salary for someone with no college. And since raises are usually awarded on a percentage basis, the wage differential gets larger and larger as the years go by.

So yes, it's worth it!

Well if you want to be a MD, it's very important that you go to medical school. I must tell you that you will be in a lot of debt if you take that route. You still have residency still after medschool. It's totally up to you, if you in it for the $ or not.
