Someone on eBay wants to send me a cheque from America (I would normally expect overseas bidders to pay by PayPal!) it is drawn out in dollars, so can I accept this? I key cheques for a living and we do not accept cheques from a different currency, they have to be special GBP cheques. So what can I do, advice would be great?

Do not take a check from anyone overseas. This could be another example of a well known scam where the check may clear your bank and credit to your account only for it to take up to three months to be recalled by the US bank. Insist on banker's checks or money orders if you must, but PayPal would be the best.

Most high street banks will take checks drawn in any legal currency, they will just charge you an admin fee and commission fees.

Paypal accepts other methods of payment besides credit card, such as direct bank withdrawal and possibly even an online cheque, and contrary to popular belief one does not need a paypal account in order to pay someone who has one. But either way I would absolutely not accept a foreign bank cheque in these days of rampant online fraud, keeping in mind that if you were to attempt to cash a splendidly well made forgery, then you could very well be the first to be held liable.

Suggest he pays by Western Union. It'll cost him a load to organise so it'll prove that he's genuine!

No. But your bank will probably change it to pounds for a fee.
