Wow, that's awful! Well if the 3 year has hit the epicenter of the lens with a permanent marker it might be over for cleaning, since solvents can damage the lens & a dry cleaner like a brush cd will not remove it.
You can try replacing the gamecube lens. It's fairly easy to do & it's a permanent fix.

Get a Gameucube lens cleaner that looks like a gamecube disc.
