.) An alpha particle is 2 protons and 2 neutrons (sometimes written as He2+). Thus, the nucleus loses 4 mass and loses 2 positive charge.

.) Because there are also naturally occuring radioisotopes (carbon-14, for example).

.) N-14 is regular Nitrogen. He2+ + N -> Oxygen 17 + 1 proton.

The product is Oxygen and not Carbon because 1 proton was emitted from the product.

.) Because mass is being converted to energy. Remember that in this case E = mc^2, 1 kg of mass releases 1 kg * (299,792,458 m/s)^2 = 8.99 * 10^16 J.

.) 1/8 = (1/2)^3, so 3 half-lifes have occurred. 36.9 / 3 = 12.3 years.
