If you are taking your birth control pills correctly then they will protect you from pregancany all month, BUT, amoxicillin decreases the effectiveness of your birth control pill. You need to use a back-up form of contraceptive during the time you are taking the antibiotics and for another seven days *after* you stop taking them. If the seven days takes you onto the pill-free week, you need to skip the pill-free week and go straight on to the active pills of a new pack.

Inform your pharmnacist that you have had unprotected sex while taking antibiotics, and he will know whether or not to increase the dose fo the emergency pill.

Whenever I was prescribed an antibiotic, the doctor always told me to use a second method of protection for a full month after the last dose. The antibiotic makes the birth control temporarily inneffective. I was sexually active after the antibiotics within a month and didn't use a second method and didn't get pregnant, so I think they say that just to be safe. But I also know a friend who got pregnant on birth control while taking antibiotics so it just depends on the time of month in the pack and everything else. I would wait a week at least after the last dose, if you are not wanting to get pregnant.

yes, antibiotics can alter the effectiveness of your birth control pills. you are probably okay since it was so early, but you should still test yourself before you continue to take the pill, just in case. b.c.pills can be very harmful to a baby, no matter the stage of pregnancy.

also, do some research about other things that will effect the pill. certain herbs (i think, ginko..not sure) can also give you a problem.

There is definitely a good chance that the oral c. won't be very useful until your next period. As far as your safe days, that all depends on the person. I would suggest asking your pharmacist about the morning after pill. I have no idea if antibiotics would affect that. Good luck with everything!

If you do take the Emergency Contraceptive then you have to take it within 72 hours of intercourse. Antibiotics do effect your birth control. You need to use another form of protection.

Yes, antibiotics can cause your oral contraception to be less effective. Also, the morning after pill does cause you to have a spontaneous abortion, FYI. I don't know if that matters to you, but it did to me and my doc didn't tell me, my pharmacist did.
