Execution kills someone physically. Prison kills people mentally and by varying degrees. Some people have the strength to stay in prison for long periods of time and have it have no effect on them. Others, however, die slowly each day they are there....And others mentally die rather quickly every day. Think of being in a place where you are told what to do every minute of everyday. Would you be able to handle that? Not having the freedom to come and go as you please? It would suck. You have different degrees of death in prison because you have different people with all different kind of tolerances.

Execution kills a person immediately while prison destroys a person little by little, like gradually eating away at a man's soul.
For example, a bullet which pierces the heart will end life immediately while cancer lingers on until the body is no longer able to sustain life. Cancer kills in small agonizing degrees but a bullet has more kindness with its instant destruction.

It means that in and executions, you die instantly. But being stuck in prison your soul dies a little each day (or by degrees). You have to suffer the effects of your decision each day your are locked up where as when you die, your suffering ends instantly.

In other words, it is saying that execution is sometimes viewed as more humane than being in prison. At least execution happens quickly, whereas time spent in prison passes by much more slowly.

To execute means to inflict capital punishment on; put to death according to law. Death is swift and permanent.
To be put in prison the person will live one day at a time. Each day he will remember why he is there. So little by little, day by day he will die.
Degrees mean any of a series of steps or stages, as in a process or course of action.
