New York looks expensive on the surface, but there are many things to do for the budget traveler. First of all, mass transit can get you just about anywhere in the city for two bucks. Don't let the stuff in the movies and urban legends about the subways scare you. They're convenient, efficient, fast, and they get you where you're going. I personally enjoy it! To this day, this native NYer has yet to experience a taxicab.
New York is a great walking town, which isn't exactly an expensive activity. There are parks, all kinds of things like that. Basically, you can find anything you're looking for in this city.
The tough part is finding a place to stay at reasonable rates. Then again, that's the trouble in any major city, including Chicago...but there, once you leave the city, there's basically nothing for quite a ways.
If you both want to try New York, GO for it! I don't think you'll regret it. Yes, it can prove to be a bit costly, but if you're smart about it, you can do just fine. The obvious tourist stuff is what'll get your wallet, especially food-wise. I look at some restaurant menus and laugh. But they're not all like that.
The outdoors stuff, the looking around, the exploring and digging down, that's fun, and it's also easy on the budget. Museums, parks, all that great stuff. As a native New Yorker, I just love simply walking around on a nice day.
Airfare is expensive, but ever thought about Amtrak? I don't know much, but I do know someone who went to Kansas City like that, a pretty good ride. It's obviously a bit slower, though.
Whatever you do, enjoy it!!
