There are 16 teams in the National League, along with 14 in the American League for a total of 30 teams in Major League Baseball.

First of all everyone should get there facts straight. There are 30 teams in the mlb. There are 14 in the American league and 16 in the national.
The reason for the uneven amount of teams is because of the Milwaukee Brewers enfranchised 1969 as the Seattle Pilots in American League, moved to Milwaukee (1970), joined National League in 1998
The n.l. central has 1 more team than the a.l. central. Also the n.l. west has 1 more team that the a.l. west.

There are 16 teams in the NL, and 14 in the AL, to insure that every team has someone to play in their league in the Weekend series. If they have 15 in each, they would have to have interleague (AL team vs. NL team) all year long, because there would be 7 games in each league and then a team left out in each league.
