It all depends on what you want from your trip.

If you really want to take in Australia, you have to, by all means. It's a totally different experience to the big cities on this side and the contrast by itself is worth the trip.

If you don't have much interest in nature or in experiencing Australia as a whole, you could be just happy to see the major cities and the known landmarks, live the buzz and the night life then you will do better by spending more days in Sydney or Melbourne.

Money is another thing: if you can't afford to fly, you are wasting one week of your trip on a train looking at practically the same view from your window.

Yes, I think you should. I hear that Perth is very beautiful with some great beaches, restaurants, shopping, night life, etc. Some must see areas - Fremantle, Northbridge, Rottnest Island, Kings Park, Swan Valley, etc. Further south is the Margaret River wine region and surfing mecca. Here are some great websites to take a look at:

I'm from the East coast, and only recently went West - it is gorgeous - totally unspoilt, some of the wildest and most amazing bits of land and beach in Oz - and wine tasting in the Margaret River is fantastic + Moneky Mia, Freemantle is surprisingly modern with great resturants and shops too

Check this site out...

Forget the cheapest way, you need the quickest way to get their... and that would be by plane...
Train trips are the longest... (the distance is approx 3291km -3days by train and thats from Sydney - one way)
so if you got the time and dont want to pay a bit extra then by all means go by train... heres the site for trains:

or

Check out virgin blue airlines for great rates for across Oz
