We just purchased two sconces, thinking they were able to be hardwired, only to open them up and see cords. Can we hardwire them? If we can, how do we do it?

I must assume that the base of the sconces are hollow?

If so, you cut a hole in the wall to accommodate a round electrical box. 14 awg house wiring will suffice. Ground the box (if metal) and the sconce base (if metal). The black and white leads get the sconce leads twisted onto them and secured with wire nuts. If you can discern the sconce wires, try to connect the one that comes from the base of the lamp to black. While the white can go to the lead that attaches to the scew portion of the lamp base.

Another approach is to use a an electric box and recessed cover designed for an electric wall clock. It has one outlet and it sits in a cavity that will accomodate the plug and some length of cord. This way you don't have to disassemble the lamps, if you are uncomfortable with that.

just disconnect the cords and replace it with hardwire - white on one, black on the other and ground to the metal body of the scone. Use good connector nuts(twist on or crimp)

yes, sounds as though you know how to hardwire, so do it the same way and throw out the long cord.

You can, But you void any warranty and UL listing, If you change or alter them in anyway, So If you do and something happens, you're screwed as far as Insurance reasons.
