My daughter was about 6 months old. My son was a bit older bit he's on the smaller side.
Whenever they get too big for the thing is fine. Usually around 15 pounds or so.

I used a bassinette for my first two children, my eldest son switched from the bassinette to the crib when he was 5 months old, my eldest daughter switched when she was 7 months. I didnt use a bassinette for my 2 youngest babies, they are now 6 month old twins and have slept in the crib since they were born, although i had the crib in my bedroom until they were 4 months.

I used one. When baby is too big for the bassinette you can move them, probably around 3 months or so. I found that the only thing it was good for was because it was easy to move from room to room. Starting out in a crib is fine.

Until he was 4 months old, our first son took naps in the bassinette. We also used it for about 3 weeks as a transition from our bed(we co-slept at night) to the crib.
Our second son only slept in his bassinette for naps for his first 3 weeks, then we switched him to his crib.
The bassinette is a cozy little space for babies to sleep in when they are newborn, but they really aren't a necessity. The biggest advantage is that they are portable.

We moved our son to his crib and his own room at 3mo and what a joy it was not to hear all the little sounds he makes when he sleeps. We just put the monitor loud enough to hear the important sounds.
I did keep the bassinette around for when we had guests that had to sleep in his room. When he was small we kept it in the living room so I could be near him during naps

My daughter was 4 months when I switched her to the crib. She decided on her own that she didn't want the basinnet anymore. She would cry and once I put her in the crib she was fine, fell right asleep. It was harder on me having her in another room, but I adjusted fast. I think when they start sleeping all night, or pulling themselves up, or rolling, is a good time to change them.

Once he started sleeping through the night i realized i no longer need one. That was at about 3-4 months old. We used the Bassinet in the bedroom and then a crib in his own room. So after he started to sleep through the night he was able to sleep in his own room.( Plus a bassinet isn't very big, so it also depends on how big your baby is.=) ) Hope this helps!!!!

About 3 months old for us. When the boys slept thought the night (at least 6 hours) I started putting them in their cribs.

When my daughter was brought home from the hospital, I alternated from the bassinet to the crib at nap time, but at night time, she slept in the bassinet so it was closer to our bed and it was easier for feeding. When she started sleeping through the night (around 3 months) we put her in her crib. The adjustment was easy for her because she was sleeping there half the time anyway.
