The main difference is the tone. the nylon with be smoother and warmer, while the steel will be brighter and crisper. (you do usaually get greater volume from steel string guitars but u throw an acoustic pickup in the soundhole and plug er in and it wolnt matter)

other than the only factors i can really think of that isnt actually based on the guitar or other outside factors not the strings them selves(said tuning problems, breaking etc.) would be:

ease of play(fretting)- the nylons are a less harsh on your hands but after u've been playing for a few months or so you shouldnt really allow this to be a determining factor.

nylons are also generally smaller than their steel string bretheren and thusly may be choice if ur just starting to play or have small hands.

playing style- generally speaking nylon is best suited for fingerstyle or flamenco style play (that is play that does not use a pick) and steel is best suited for flatpicking and pickstrumming- not to say that u cant or shouldnt do both on both its just what they're generally used for.

restringing- nylon are often more difficult to restring as most dont use ballend-string and bridge pins. instead i must actually tie them to the bridge. now once u've seen it done and had a little practice its not that hard it just takes some practice and will take longer to restring.

id just suggest u take a trip to ur local guitar store and play a few different models of each style.

I prefer steel string. Because I play so hard, the nylon breaks more often, and I notice the strings tune out a little quicker on me. Steel strings are a little louder too.

#1 you have to have a guitar capable of accepting nylon strings. They attach completely different. Nylon is normally used on classical guitars.

I'm assuming you are asking about an acoustic, the sound will be a little mellower with nylon, I play electric only, so I never touch nylon, but they do tend to stretch and need retuned more often
