I want to write about an issue that needs addressing. Does anyone know of corruption that should be exposed? I'm younger, so a lot of topics that I want to cover are too dangerous for me. But I hate being confined to write about trivial matters that don't help anyone. Any topic suggestions are welcome, unless they get deeply into politics (I think that I should wait until I'm older to write about politics). Thank you!

On second thought, if you could also suggest some sillier topics as well the more serious subjects, that would be greatly appreciated.

Preferably something that's not written about often.

It's hard for me to understand people who come here saying "I want to write - what should I write about?" I am never without ideas to write about. Writing isnt just an occupation, it is a part of my being. It's what I am. You should write about the world around you. I always say start by writing what you KNOW. That shouldnt be hard -- bullies in school, peer pressure, girls being pressured into sex, kids who feel different, kids whose parents are divorced, being the new kid, kids of different ethnic backgrounds, frustration of feeling "dumb", the internet, auditioning for a school play and getting turned down, kids playing sports, kids with serious illness, kids who decide to do something to help others, kids displaced by hurricane katrina, being the smart kid, getting your first job, wanting your first car, wanting that expensive pair of jeans your parents cant afford ... my list could go on and on ..

Start with short stories - lots of them. Then eventually you will write something that cries out to be a longer piece. That's how to get started. C.

I am not sure how old you are and what you believe is "too dangerous" for you. I suppose many of the topics you might want to consider would be things that are happening right in your world. I don't know where you live, but in my city, more and more young people are going to jail and even loosing their lives over senseless crimes. As recently as last month, a 16 year old male was caught coming out of a Mapco with a gun in his hand and when the police demanded he put down the weapon, he began to fire at the officer! The officer had no choice except to shoot back. The young man was shot in the neck and died instantly. There have been a rash of home invasions as well. Crime is always a topic you can write about. Additionally, young people seem to be getting farther and farther away from the reality of what a good education entails. Many students don't like to read - and their parents are not making them. In our school, we have a rash of students who are depressed, cut themselves and practice "Gothic" beliefs. I could go on, but there's a good start for you right there. There are plenty of topics you can write about that are steeped in corruption. You don't have to look too far.

Everything has been written before. The trick is to put an original spin on it and write it in your voice. Pick something that is of interest to you, something you've always been curious about. When I first started writing non-fiction informative pieces, I picked topics which I knew little about but was extremely curious to learn more. I did my research, wrote my article and proposed the idea to an editor who loved it. Because I approached an old topic from a fresh viewpoint, it sounded new again.

Good luck.

Diamonds! And all those other pieces of useless rock that people think are worth something just because the De Beer cartel say they are.

Everything is political in this world. Any issue that needs addressing is a political issue in one way or another.

Good luck, and whatever you decide to write about you will learn along the way, and that's always a goood thing.

Are you writing fiction or non-fiction? A novel/book, short story or essay? I've always heard that you should write what you know. Take feelings/situations from your life and run with it. You'll be more believable and passionate if you're coming from the "inside."
