Australia declared war on Germany and Italy, nearly at the same time as Britain. However, the experience of Australian forces under British command in WW1, made the Gov't insist that Australian forces be commanded by Australian officers. Australian land forces operated in North Africa, Greece, Crete until withdrawn to the Pacific. Australians also were part of the Singapore garrison, and operated extensively in the South/SW Pac. Royal Australian Navy (RAN) vessels worked closely with USN in the island hopping campaign. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) personnel and units fought in Europe and the Pacific.
Anecdotally, my uncle (a Canadian) was a Lancaster, and Mosquite navigator. His crew in both tours was Australian, and he had nothing but good things to say about them.

Australia sent its armed forces to fight alongside Britain during the Second World War. In 1940-41, Australian forces played prominent roles in the fighting in the Mediterranean theatre, including Operation Compass, the Siege of Tobruk, the Greek campaign, the Battle of Crete, the Syria-Lebanon campaign and the Second Battle of El Alamein.
After the Fall of Singapore in February 1942, 15,000 Australian soldiers became prisoners of war. A few days later, Darwin was heavily bombed by Japanese planes, the first time the Australian mainland had ever been attacked by enemy forces, an event which caused a state of near-panic throughout the country. Over the following 19 months, Australia was attacked from the air almost 100 times.

At First Australia was providing food stuffs to British forces and some man power.
Then when we were about to send some troopers to Europe some man in Tokyo decided to Bomb Pearl Harbour and threaten South East Asia.
Thus we were in a mainly defensive position and supporting USA efforts in the South Pacific.
