why is it when one is telling a personal story...some one (usually being a freind) has to jump in and turn the story or subject about him/herself...and once again, usually starting like this..."I remember when something similar like that happend to me"...what's up with that? I'm trying to tell a story here!

People actually think they're more important. Happens to me all the time; I just let them talk, and then say, "That wasn't even on the same level as what I was talking about... If you're going to play the one-upmanship game, make sure you don't use lame material." Then they leave, and that's pretty much the end of it.

Oh, wait; didn't mean to include myself. Sorry...

Some people are simply attention-seekers and they weigh us all down with their one-up-man-ship. Some are liars and others just embellish the truth. Insecurity hides behind all phonies so tearing them down is easy, but also sometimes cruel. Try to avoid them if you can. If you can't try to show you aren't interested. They are highly sensitive to the brush off and might leave you alone but not always. Insecurity is their problem.

It sounds like this person is just trying to fit in and talk about something they have in common with you. If it happens constantly, they obviously have self esteem issues and are seeking attention.

Seriously speaking, I experience the same. I think it is anchored on the theory on basic needs about a person's steem needs, feeling of belongingness and recognition.

It's called self-absorbtion and many people suffer from this syndrome. We live in a selfish society and it doesn't seem to be getting any better, either.

I think in general they are not trying to still your spotlight, they are just saying - I know how you feel because a simular situation happened to me.

I don't talk about myself, I talk to myself.

That is really rude what your friend is doing, turn the tables!
