I think there may well be... There is an equation (can't remember who wrote it, but it's quite famous in astronomy circles) to "work it out"... Unfortunately it's a rather subjective equation and depends on your own beliefs and assumptions...
It basically says that the number of planets with sentient life is based on the chances of a certain thing happening...
1. How likely is it that there is another solar system around a star?
2. Out of those, how likely is it that one of the planets can support life?
3. Out of those, how likely is it that the planets conditions actually did create life?
4. Out of those, how likely is it that the life that formed was able to develop and evolve?
5. Out of those, how likely is it that evolution has taken the life to "advanced" civilization status?
6. Out of those advanced civilizations, how likely is it that they survived the technological age? (think about climate change, nuclear wars etc)
7. Out of those that survived, how likely is it that they have sufficient resources to maintain survival?
As you can see, it's a personal thought that determines what the chances are... But when you consider how massive the universe is, even if you're very cynical and pessimistic and say the chances of each of the above are 1 in 1 billion, you would still be left with millions of advanced civilizations out there...
I personally think there are billions out there. They may have visited us to "study" us, or even get a glimpse of they're own past... If they have, then they clearly have the upper hand with technology and could easily be unseen.
You might even consider why none have ever reached out a hand of friendship... Perhaps they watch our news broadcasts... And lets face it... would you want to know mankind right now?!
As for parallel dimensions, I think it's very UNLIKLEY that they DON'T exist... The universe is infinite... Which means everything in it is also infinite... Possibilities are infinite too.
I beleive that everytime a choice is made, a parallel reality is made where in one, you make one decision, and in the other, the other decision plays out... Obviously, with so many decisions being made each day by so many people, that makes one heck of a lot of prallel realities! Now imagine that there are billions of other civilizations out there making thier own billions of decisions every day... It's impossible to even comprehend the vastness of it all!

There is a very good possibility that there are other sentient life forms out there. Space-time is extremely large and it is not impossible to think that other beings have evolved to the point that we are currently or even beyond. The only problem is that, given our current level of technology and knowledge, we have not been able to find any. However, we haven't been able to look very far in a very scrutinizing and analytical way (i.e. looking at a planets surface in enough resolution to tell whether or not life is evolving). This is due partly because of the time it takes light to travel from those distances to our planet. The pictures we see are millions of years old in terms of their origin. If there are more advanced beings, I doubt that they're even going to bother with us until we've reached a certain level of technological expertise, knowledge, and social cohesion. Somewhat like a "trial by fire" process to see if we're strong enough as a species. Much like the Spartans agoge or "upbringing." Or, we just haven't made a big enough impression to be noticed in our tiny little corner of space. As far as there being more than four (4) dimensions. Current plugging into the super-string theory illuminates the fact that there may be about 12 (give or take) dimensions on top of the current four that we experience, but that they are so small and curled up that we can never notice them. They lie at every point in space-time. Further research shows that there may be multiple time dimensions as well. The magic is that, in order for the string theory to work, multiple dimensions on an extremely small scale must exist for the strings to vibrate at the correct frequencies to give off the charges and forces that we see in everyday life. It's really quite interesting. I am no master on it though and will not go any farther. I too am still learning. I hope this helps, at least somewhat :)

So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.
Why haven't we heard from them?
Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.
Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.
Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.
Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.
Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.
It is really impossible to know for sure.
The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

Yes, it is very likely that other *intelligent* life exists in the universe. When you think about it, the chances of Earth having life were about 1 in 1,000,000,000,000 and there are trillions of trillions of trillions of stars out in the universe and exponentially more planets. As far as dimensions, I don't really have an opinion.

Given the number of 'other' planets out there, it'd just totally defy all of the odds to think that there weren't millions of them with civilizations at least the equal of ours or maybe even far more advanced.
