I have a Citroen Xsara and yesterday whilst driving the exhaust fell off. Not the whole thing mind you, just the pipe that goes from the engine to the 'box'. I have managed to secure the loose exhaust to the underside of the car until I can get it to a garage but I would like to know what are the potential hazards of running a car in this condition, aside from the noise? It sounds like I'm driving a tractor!...

The car will be running inefficiently and illegally. A corroded or broken exhaust is an MOT failure which therefore means it is not roadworthy, and the noise will also probably be illegal.

The escaping gases will be confusing the O2 sensor intro sending the wrong signal to the ECU and the emissions will be wrong.

You should have it repaired as soon as possible.

Cheers

Besides all the correct answers regarding the fumes etc, the danger is that at the break the engine will be putting out extremely hot exhaust gases and could damage some parts in the engine compartment especially electrical wiring, and you should get it replaced to avoid a much more costly repair, the part that needs replaced is called the down pipe.

as stated above incorrectly, you will not harm your internal engine due to lack of backpressure from the loss of the muffler. Rather, you free flowing unrestricted engine may actually improve in mileage and performance.
The danger is of the exhaust gasses entering the passenger compartment and causing carbon monoxide poisoning. If you feel nauseous or lightheaded while driving stop the car and get out immediately.

Won't cause any damage to engine, but get it fixed 'cos you can be fined for having faulty exhaust.
Only danger would be if you haven't made it secure enough, and it falls off onto the road.

its purely" secure" ina loose experience of the word in case you cant scent the fumes in the cabin,kwikshi7 living as much as their ineffective popularity, get it taken care of quickly as you could and learn from this that "you will get extra appropriate than a kwikshi7 fit,we are the lads to mistrust" in case you could scent fumes from in the vehicle then dont force it and once you do return it to them, force with homestead windows open to verify ventilation, plus call for a chit to your wasted 2nd journey and time on a count which could be an effortless technique.
